The iconic TCS New York City Marathon celebrated its 54th edition on Sunday 2 November, once again establishing itself as the world's most participated race.
Under perfect weather conditions (12°C), bright sunshine and a light wind, the event attracted an all-time record of more than 51,000 finishers (up 20% from 49,000 in 2024). Hailing from 130 countries, the more than 60,000 initial registrants transformed the streets of New York into a festival of self-improvement and solidarity.
African Dominance
In the elite categories, the Kenyan domination was absolute and emotionally charged. Benson Kipruto was crowned men's champion in an unforgettable thriller: he crossed the finish line in 2:08:09, snatching the title by just 0.03 seconds in an incredible photo-finish from compatriot Alexander Mutiso.
This time sets a new course record, surpassing the 2:08:40 of 2023, and completes Kipruto's fourth Major (Chicago, London, Boston and NYC) for Olympic bronze in Paris 2024.
While in the women's race, Hellen Obiri swept the field with a historic 2:20:32, breaking Sharon Lokedi's previous record by 2:27 minutes (2023). The former 5000m world champion won her second consecutive NYC and third Major in a row, dedicating the victory to her family in an emotional press conference.
The Spanish Rise: 1,200 Runners and Inspirational Figures
Spain shone with a record delegation of 1,200 athletes (2.2% of the total, +15% vs. 2024), reflecting the running boom in the country - with 3 million active runners according to the RFEA.
Although there were no elite podiums, there were some outstanding names such as Azucena Díaz (35 years old, Madrid), who was the best Spanish elite female: 18th with 2:30:45, her best time in a Major.
And Abelardo Martinez (29, Barcelona), who led the Spanish men by finishing 42nd with a time of 2:14:22 in his NYC Marathon debut.
The Iconic Tour: A Journey Through NYC's Five Boroughs
The 42.195 km winds through Staten Island (mass start from the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge at 8:00 AM ET, with green, orange and blue waves to avoid crowds), Brooklyn (euphoric descent to the ‘Screech Tunnel’ at km 15, with 100,000 fans), Queens (Pulaski Bridge in Long Island City), Bronx (Queensboro Bridge ‘wall’ climb and hip-hop energy) and Manhattan (Harlem, 5th Avenue and emotional finish in Central Park, under the Tavern on the Green).
Con 1.000m de desnivel acumulado pero sin puentes largos post-km 20, el diseño maximiza la velocidad y el espectáculo skyline.
Maratón NYC: Impacto Global en la ciudad
NYC is not just a race: it is the world's most participated marathon, having increased the number of participants by 20% this year.
In fact, the economic impact for the city is estimated at $1.2 billion, with 2.5 million live viewers and a global following of 20 million people via ESPN+, ABC and the NYRR app.
This reflects the economic importance of the sport in the development of cities.
